| People are often
surprised to learn that there are similarities in the hair loss
between women and men. There are similarities, but it differs from the
male pattern in several distinct ways. Perhaps the most striking
difference is that in women the hair line is characteristically well
maintained, so that the receding (expanding forehead) picture is not
seen. Women tend to lose more diffusely, but often a more pronounced
loss is seen on the top of the head behind the hairline, with a
thinning tendency extending backwards.
Our advice to all women
who suspect that their hair is thinning is to consult a physician who
is experienced in hair loss problems as self diagnosis is often wrong.
In addition, the establishment of a diagnosis is doubly important as
there are a variety of treatment options that are available to women.
